White House lockdown after loud noise is heard

The US Secret Service locked down the White House Saturday after a loud noise was heard as reporters gathered to await President Barack Obama and wife Michelle’s departure for Selma, Alabama, a pool report said.
The source of the noise was unclear.
A Secret Service K9 unit was investigating a vehicle on 16th and Constitution Avenue which borders the South Lawn of the White House, agency spokesman Brian Leary said in an email.
The Washington DC Fire Department, meanwhile, reported a fire at a food cart on 15th Street NW on the east side of the White House. It said the fire was put out.
Security personnel shut down access to the White House, roping off Lafayette Park on the White House’s northern side.
“As pool and other press gathered outside near the South Lawn for the departure of President Obama and the First Family on the way to Selma, Ala., for a historic 50th anniversary march, a loud noise was heard,” a pool report said.
“The Secret Service then moved press back into the briefing room and locked the doors,” it added.
Subsequent pool reports said the presidential motorcade left the White House and at 11:36 am Obama, Michelle, their daughters Malia and Sasha and Michelle’s mother, Marian Robinson, departed for Selma aboard Air Force One.

Boko Haram joins ISIS

Boko Haram militants, have pledged allegiance to Islamic State, according to a message on the group’s Twitter account.
The message, which could not immediately be verified, appeared to be by the group’s leader, Abu Bakr bin Mohammed Shekau, who addressed himself as the Imam of Jamaátu Ahlus Sunnah Lidda’awati Wal Jihad (Boko Haram) and was addressed to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi al-Husseini al-Qurashi, the leader of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) or Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
In the message, he said. “From your brother in Allah, Abu Mohamed Abu Bakr bin Mohammed Shekau, the Imam of Jamaátu Ahlus Sunnah Lidda Awaati Wal Jihad to the Caliph of Muslims Abubakar Abu Bakr Ibrahim ibn Awad ibn Ibrahim al-Husseini al-Qurashi.
We are sending you this message, following what Allah said in his Quran (And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah and be not divided among yourselves) and what the Prophet, Peace be upon him said (Whoever died and he had not Imam, died by death of ignorance).

Nigerian troops have routed terrorists from different towns and communities, including Bara, the Headquarter of Gulani Local Government Area of Yobe State in the last few weeks.
Last week, President Goodluck Jonathan said the tide has “definitely turned” against militant Islamists as Nigerian troops and their regional allies recapture territory.
President Idriss Deby of Chad, Wednesday, said he knew the whereabouts of Abubakar Shekau, and called on him to surrender or risk being killed.
Boko Haram began a military campaign to impose Islamic rule in northern Nigeria in 2009.
It would be the latest in a series of groups to swear allegiance to ISIS.

Pacquiao-Mayweather: Floyd may not be able hold off Manny, says Tyson

Unbeaten Floyd Mayweather’s usual conservative style might not be enough to hold off Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao, former heavyweight world champion Mike Tyson has warned.
Tyson is just the latest big name to weigh in with an opinion on how the long-awaited showdown between the two pound-for-pound greats might go when they step into the ring in Las Vegas on May 2.
“He has to fight,” Tyson said this week of Mayweather, in a video posted on YouTube.
“If he’s not going to score, he is going to lose the round. Also, if he is laid back, he is going to lose the round.”
Tyson says the fighters who have troubled Pacquiao have been prolific punchers.
“Floyd doesn’t throw nowhere near 100 punches a round,” he said. “He’s more, you know, scientific about it. He really plots a lot. And he sits around and he poses. And this guy (Pacquiao) is all over — fading, moving.
“I just don’t think (Mayweather) is going to be able to play that plotting, skill … Floyd’s got to fight the first couple of rounds.”

Tyson isn’t the only former heavyweight world champion who has his eye on Pacquiao-Mayweather.
Evander Holyfield, speaking at a sponsors’ event in New York on Tuesday, said he plans to be at the welterweight unification bout at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
“I don’t know who’s going to win, that’s the reason I’m going to see it,” the four-time heavyweight champion told Newsday.
“If I had to pay, I would pay to see that fight, because that’s how great that fight will be.”
Holyfield said the differing styles of Mayweather and Pacquiao make the fight hard to handicap.
“Pacquiao, the only way he can win is if he corners him off,” Holyfield said.
“Can he corner him off? If he corners him off, I think he will win … I don’t think he can. But that’s what makes the fight so interesting.”

Humans just made history by reaching an icy dwarf planet for the first time

NASA's Dawn spacecraft became the first space probe in history to ever reach a dwarf planet.

Since it was launched in 2007, Dawn has been accelerating through space and on Friday morning at 9:39 am ET, NASA confirmed that the spacecraft had reached its final: the dwarf planet Ceres.

"We feel exhilarated," Chris Russell, principal investigator of the Dawn mission at the University of California, said in a NASA statement. "We have much to do over the next year and a half, but we are now on station with ample reserves, and a robust plan to obtain our science objectives."

Ceres is the largest object in a strip of rocky debris, called the asteroid belt, floating in space between the planets Mars and Jupiter. In fact, it was the first dwarf planet ever discovered back in 1801. At that time, however, it was classified as a planet, and then later as an asteroid. Today, it meets the criteria for a relatively new class of objects called dwarf planets — a classification that includes the much maligned and very loved Pluto.

(NASA/JPL-Caltech/UCLA/MPS/DLR/IDA) Dawn is now about 38,000 miles above the surface of Ceres. But over the course of the year it will descend toward the surface, eventually getting closer than the International Space Station is to Earth and snapping pictures of the surface that will be 800 times sharper than what the Hubble Space Telescope could take.

In addition to becoming the first spacecraft to orbit a dwarf planet, Dawn is also the only satellite to orbit two planets during its lifetime. And this amazing achievement is made possible by Dawn's ion propulsion system, which gave the spacecraft enough power to escape the gravitational grip of Vesta when it orbited in 2011, and continue on through space toward Ceres.

As the spacecraft's propulsion system takes it closer to the surface of Ceres, scientists are excited to learn about the planet's composition and find out just what the heck those mysterious white dots, shown in the image above, on its surface could possible be.

Troops recapture two strategic territories from Boko Haram

Nigerian troops have recaptured two territories held by Boko Haram insurgents in the Northeast of Nigeria.

In a statement issued by Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman, Acting Director Army Public Relations, the Nigerian military have recaptured Mafa and Marte Local Governments Areas of Borno State on Wednesday and Friday respectively.

“During these operations, the gallant and courageous troops recovered a large quantity of high caliber of arms and ammunitions including anti-aircraft guns from the insurgents,” the statement said.

“It is significant to note that our troops did not suffer any casualty during these operations.”

Usman noted that presently, troops are conducting cordon and search and mopping up operations in the recovered territories, while effort is on going to recover more grounds from the fleeing terrorists.

With the capture of Mafa, Marte LGAs, and the Chadian troops holding fort in Dikwa, the international route from Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Central African Republic is now fully secured.

With this positive development, the security of the area has significantly improved. It is hoped that international trade and socio-economic activities would be restored along this corridor.

5 killed in shooting at bar in Mali

A shooting at a bar popular with expatriates in Mali left five people dead Saturday, including French and Belgian citizens, authorities said.

One French citizen, one Belgian and three Malians were killed in the attack in the capital of Bamako, said Gabriel Toure, director of a local hospital.

An additional eight people were injured, he said.

French President Francoise Hollande released a statement condemning the attack. He said there is a possibility but no confirmation of a French victim.

The French Embassy in Bamako warned its citizens to be on alert if they go out in public.

Though it's unclear whether any rebel group is responsible for the attack, Malian forces have battled Islamist militants in the northern part of the nation for years.

Mali plunged into chaos after soldiers staged a coup three years ago. As a result, Tuareg fighters capitalized on the power vacuum to launch an insurgency that ended with their takeover of the north.

After the Tuareg fighters seized the region, a power struggle erupted with local Islamist radicals. The extremists toppled the tribe and seized control of a large piece of northern Mali, an area the size of France.

Since then, the nation has battled various rebel factions, mostly in the northern region, with the help of French and African forces.
