Dictatorship: Only Abacha Was Worse Than Buhari

Professor Wole Soyinka has declared his  General Muhammadu Buhari, All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, as the second most brutal dictator in the history of the country. In a video interview posted on the  BBC website on Monday, Soyinka said: After Abacha, he (Buhari) represented the most brutal face of military dictatorship. There is no question about that.”

Responding to a question on Buhari’s candidature, given the squalid human rights record of the junta he headed, the Nobel laureate said there is a chance that the APC presidential candidate may have changed, adding that non-stop incumbency is inimical to democracy: “Basically for me, anything which smells of permanent incumbency with little interruption, perhaps, is not very palatable.“But you know the environment changes, circumstances change and even the worst military can be internally demobilised.“I have got to a point at which I look at the possibility of genuine internal transformation in some individuals.“I have been disappointed before and we must be ready to be disappointed again.“And if we make the wrong choice, we must be ready to go back to the trenches,” he said.
