ILLEGAL DUMP SITE: Delta Imposes N250,000 Fine On Residents

The Delta State government has imposed N250,000 fine on residents of the state who dump refuse indiscriminately.The Permanent secretary in the state Ministry of environment, Mrs. Felicia Adun, who gave the hint while supervising the cleaning of the cenotaph in Asaba, assured Deltans of the sustenance and extension of on-going cleaning up exercise in the state capital to other areas in the state.
She expressed worry over the refusal of people to comply with the sanitation laws, saying that the environmental Sanitation Marshal have arrested defaulte and arraigned them in court.
She added that hence forth, any defaulter arrested would be arraigned and fined N250, 000 for violating the state sanitation laws, adding that the marshals were on ground to enforce sanitation compliance and arrest defaulters.
The Permanent Secretary assured Deltans of the state government’s preparedness to sustain the cleaning-up exercise; he expressed sadness at the impact of illegal political billboard and poster on the environment.
In another development, the state commissioner for environment, Chief frank Omare, has advised Deltans to register with private Waste Disposal agency to avoid humiliation of being arrested and arraigned in sanitation court.
Chief Omare, who threatened to embark on enforcement of compliance soon, admonished the members of the public on the importance of personal hygiene.
